1. Main Gate The main gate of Il Senso De Acqua is formidable. Its stone wall is over ten feet thick and runs the breadth of the causeway, a distance of only 100 feet. The gates themselves are of solid oak, reinforced with heavy iron bands and secured with a bar of solid iron two square feet thick which slides through two bolt holes in each gate and deep into the wall on the opposite side. The two towers which frame the gate are forty feet high and contain a spiral staircase with many arrow slits spaced around its outer wall. The top of the towers can support a force of ten archers each and also contains a metal cauldron that can dump flaming oil or tar onto those below. The walls themselves extend ten feet into the ocean on each side, where the water is deep enough to prevent armored attackers from passing, and also hinders the movement of any attackers trying to bypass the gate and wall. See this location on the map. 2. Guard House The main guard house located behind the wall serves as home to fifty of Il Senso's soldiers. This force patrols the main approaches to the city (those along the shoreline parallel to the main gates) and also serves as guards for the gate, questioning any who enter or leave. These men will be the first to man the towers should a threat arise, and it is their duty to close the gate and throw the massive bolt in case of assault. While the duty is boring, it is also the highest profile duty and so its soldiers do not shirk their responsibilities, for any slacking would be quickly noticed. And punishment in the Legion is severe. See this location on the map. 3. Produce Market These four buildings serve as a market for the fruits and grains which are grown in the agricultural district. While much of the produce is shipped into the city proper, these markets do a brisk business with the servants of the Great Houses whose owners want only the freshest produce on their tables. Many Demi-humans also come here as their lower social status in the city can prompt feelings of unease in the crowed markets of the Merchant district. See this location on the map. 4. Livestock Market / Auction Serving the same purpose as the Produce Market, this building houses the livestock raised in the district. Only the live animals are kept here, mostly for auction or sale to those who want only the freshest meats. Most of the livestock in Il Senso is taken to the Merchant district to the slaughter houses and meat markets. Mainly smaller animals such as pigs, goats and sheep are raised here, although a small herd of cattle is kept as well for special functions and important dinners. The market is overseen by Pontius Malus. See this location on the map. 5. Guard Towers Constructed in much the same way as those at the front gate, these towers stand forty feet high and boast walls that are over three feet thick. Bigger than the gate towers, they can support thirty men each in fighting positions all along its height as well as at the top. In place of the cauldrons found at the gate, each of these towers serves as a base for a large arbalest. These weapons require a crew of three men to operate and can hit and damage ships at long ranges. Their only drawback is their inability to fire at targets closer than fifty feet to the tower, as they cannot be pivoted down that far on their bases. Each tower stores thirty bolts for the weapon. The bolts can be set aflame with some preparation. Normally, an eight man Contubernium mans these towers. See this location on the map. 6. Residence of Senator Crucius Tarpas This large, three story structure serves as home and office to Senator Crucius Tarpas. Tarpas is an elderly human male who possesses thinning white hair which surrounds a balding pate. He is small of stature and stooped a bit with age. His home is opulently decorated with statues and frescos depicting the days of Il Senso's glory. The serving staff of twenty live on the grounds along with Tarsas, his wife Ederonna and their two sons Persicus and Liacanthry. Both boys are almost fully grown and serve in the Legions, though it is understood they will follow their father into politics when their terms of enlistments are up. Tarpas has long hated the location of the livestock market, as he must pass it daily and its odors travel into his home when the wind favors it. His attempts to have it moved have been so far unsuccessful. The Senator's well is drying up, its magic waning. It now barely makes enough fresh water each day to support the family and retainers for that day. Quite soon, it is expected to cease production all together. See this location on the map. 7. Workers' Homes Constructed mainly of wattle, straw and wood, these small single story dwelling serve as homes for the dozens of farm and field laborers who work in the district. The workers are paid little, but supplement their poor income by a tolerated form of thievery. They are tacitly allowed to take home enough food to feed themselves and their families. In the hard times of recent years, this seemingly harsh "luxury" is becoming more and more desired by the rest of the population. The work force consists mostly of humans, but a number of Halflings, Gnomes and even a few Elves also toil in the fields and livestock range. See this location on the map. |
