Myrddin is a large continent that is still recovering from a terrible cataclysm. Over four centuries ago, mortal beings who had grown reckless and vain with their power, challenged the gods themselves for rulership of the world. The battle was long and costly; much of Myrrdin’s surface was devastated. During the early days of the war, some major cities decided to seal themselves off from the rest of Myrrdin in hopes of surviving the cataclysm that was sweeping their land. They were successful, powerful magics protected their citizens from spells and vicious weather, and their armies fought bravely in their defense against hordes of dark creatures and evil beings.
In the end, the gods were triumphant but weary. They left the land of Myrrdin to the mortals while they rested. Within the few remaining cities, the survivors of the war made do as best they could while waiting to see if it was safe to emerge. For many, many years it was not. Raids by Orcs and other foul creatures kept the beleaguered citizens holed up behind their walls. Foraging parties sent into the surrounding countryside were often ambushed.
It took many years for the cities to carve a small safety zone around their cities that their people could expand into. But, after four hundred years, this zone and the cities’ own self-sufficiency was waning. New territory and expansion were needed or the cities would perish.
Bold adventurers were called to lead this exploration and expansion. What awaited them beyond the walls of their city, none knew. But the need was great and, soon, brave men and women stepped forth to answer the call. The time to re-tame their world was at hand. It was a time for heroes.
